It is absolutely amazing. Vagus nerve stimulation could be a new alzheimer's treatment.

The clue to curing many chronics diseases once thought incurable are now being found in stimulating the vagus nerve. The Journal of Psychiatry just reported that Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is safe and beneficial for some patients with Alzheimer's Disease. It is the identical procedure that I had for depression, which is also the identical procedure performed in epilepsy patients.

This incredibly important study showed that VNS is well tolerated and safe in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, the study indicated that VNS may be of benefit, as a cognitive enhancing therapy. Just over 50% of patients showed improvement or no decline in the Alzheimer Disease. Furthermore 70.6% of patients had improvement or no decline from baseline on the Mini-Mental Status Examination(MMSE).

This news is coming on the same day that the Alzheimer's Association reported the following alarming statistics:

"More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's , a 10 percent increase since the last Alzheimer's Association estimate five years ago — and a count that supports the long-forecast dementia epidemic as the population grays."

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, averaging 25 inches. Vagus means "wandering" in Latin. True to its name, the vagus nerve wanders from the brain stem through organs in the neck, thorax and abdomen.

My Dad was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Perhaps one day, there will be two members of my family with a vagus nerve stimulator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
