"Phenolic antioxidants are bioactive compounds in fruits, vegetables and beverages that play an active role in the human body. By quenching free radicals they help maintain oxidative balance and are thought to play a key role in maintaining and improving health,"...The new study draws particular attention to the juice of Concord grapes, which came out on top in terms of highest overall antioxidant capacity and the highest and broadest range of polyphenols...Other top scorers were cloudy apple juice and cranberry juice. Crozier and his team assessed the total phenolic content of 13 commercially available fruit juices and juice drinks deemed to be the most popular in the UK using the Folin-Ciocalteu assay...The main components in purple grape juice were flavan-3-ols, anthocyanins, and hydroxycinnamates, together accounting for 93 per cent of the total phenolic content. The results for the red grape juice were said to be equal to those for a Beaujolais red wine... "
