Studies show exercise boon for obesity, diabetes - Yahoo! News:

"Walking a bit more each day can help people control their Type 2 diabetes but obese people trying to keep weight off may need to exercise harder than they had thought... Simply walking 45 minutes more each day helped people with diabetes use blood sugar better...Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI scans showed that people who walked 45 minutes more each day burned about 20 percent more fat -- increasing the ability of the muscles to store sugar and help control diabetes... But current exercise guidelines calling for people to get 150 minutes -- 2.5 hours -- each week may not be enough to help the obese keep weight off...people who want to lose weight and keep it off get at least 4-1/2 hours of exercise a week..."

Regular Walking Protects The Masai -- Who Eat High Fat Diet -- From Cardiovascular Disease
Regular Walking Protects The Masai -- Who Eat High Fat Diet -- From Cardiovascular Disease: "ScienceDaily (July 20, 2008) — Scientists have long been puzzled by how the Masai can avoid cardiovascular disease despite having a diet rich in animal fats. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet believe that their secret is in their regular walking...their results show that the Masai not only have a diet richer in animal fat than that of the other subjects, but also run the lowest cardiovascular risk, which is to say that they have the lowest body weights, waist-measurements and blood pressure, combined with a healthy blood lipid profile...What sets the Masai lifestyle apart is also a very high degree of physical activity. The Masai studied expended 2,500 kilocalories a day more than the basic requirement, compared with 1,500 kilocalories a day for the farmers and 891 kilocalories a day for the urbanites. According to the team, most Westerners would have to walk roughly 20 km a day to achieve the Masai level of energy expenditure...The scientists believe that the Masai are protected by their high physical activity rather than by some unknown genetic factor..."

Walking packs huge health punch
Walking packs a huge health punch - Yahoo! Health

"...Before exercising regularly, 41 percent of the study subjects met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. At the end of the 8-month exercise program, only 27 percent did...People in the study who exercised the least - walking 30 minutes 6 days a week or the equivalent of about 11 miles per week -- gained significant benefit, while those who exercised the most, jogging about 17 miles per week, gained slightly more benefit in terms of lowered metabolic syndrome scores...People who did a short period of very vigorous exercise didn't improve their metabolic syndrome scores as much as those who performed less intense exercise for a longer period, the researchers found...This suggests, they say, that there's more value in doing moderate intensity exercise every day rather than more intense activity just a few days a week..."

Harder The Exercise The Better
Walking not enough for significant exercise benefits EurekAlert 9/20/06 ""Generally, low-intensity activity such as walking alone is not likely going to give anybody marked health benefits compared to programs that occasionally elevate the intensity"...Of the 128 sedentary men and women who completed the six-month research program, those who took part in a more active traditional fitness regimen increased their peak oxygen uptake, an indicator of aerobic fitness, by 10 per cent. Those who took part in the walking program experienced a four per cent increase. Systolic blood pressure also dropped by 10 per cent for the traditional fitness group, compared to four per cent for the group who just walked."
The debate between 10,000 steps walking vs running has always seemed a bit odd. Just look at athletes. Clearly their bodies are radically different... and healthier than those that just walk.
