Vitamin C May Interfere With Cancer Treatment

Vitamin C May Interfere With Cancer Treatment - Well Blog - NYTimes.com:
2008.10.01
"The researchers found that just like healthy cells, cancer cells also benefit from vitamin C. The vitamin appeared to repair a cancer cell’s damaged mitochondria, the energy center of cells. When the mitochondria is injured, it sends signals that force the cell to die, but vitamin C interrupts that process...“Vitamin C appears to protect the mitochondria from extensive damage, thus saving the cell,” Dr. Heaney said. “And whether directly or not, all anticancer drugs work to disrupt the mitochondria to push cell death.”...Dr. Heaney measured the buildup of vitamin C levels in cells and said that the levels of vitamin C used in the experiments were similar to those that would result if a patient took large doses of the vitamin in supplement form. Earlier research at the cancer center showed that vitamin C seems to accumulate within cancer cells more than in normal cells."

Antioxidant cream guards skin from UV damage

Antioxidant cream guards skin from UV damage - Yahoo! News: "Thu Sep 18, 2008
"(Reuters Health) - A cream containing vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid protects the skin from sun damage and reduces cancer-associated mutations in skin cells, new research shows...The cream's "mechanism of action is different from sunscreens and would be expected to supplement the sun protection provided by sunscreens,"...The active cream almost completely blocked the production of thymine dimers, a type of UV-related genetic damage, as well as the induction of the tumor suppressor gene p53...While unprotected skin exposed to UV radiation produced substances called cytokines that promote inflammation and suppress immune system function, protected skin did not..."

Vitamin C injections 'slows cancer growth'

BBC NEWS | Health | Vitamin C 'slows cancer growth':
2008.08.04
"An injection of a high dose of vitamin C may be able to hold back the advance of cancers, US scientists claim...The vitamin may start a destructive chain reaction within the cancer cell, they add. The jab halved the size of brain, ovarian and pancreatic tumours in mice...The dose they employed - up to four grams per kilo of bodyweight - was far greater than any that could be achieved using diet or vitamin pills, as the digestive system does not absorb more than a fixed amount taken orally...Tumour growth and weight fell by between 41% and 53%, and while in untreated mice, the disease spread rapidly to involve other body parts, no such spread was seen in the vitamin C-treated animals...The vitamin C reacts with this chemical make-up, producing enough hydrogen peroxide to kill the cell, while leaving healthy cells unscathed.

However, Dr Alison Ross, from Cancer Research UK said that much more work would have to be done to see if vitamin C could be a viable treatment..."

Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life

Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'| News | This is London
2008.04.16
"Vitamins taken by around a third of the population do not extend life and may even cause premature death, according to a respected group of international scientists...After reviewing 67 studies involving more than 230,000 men and women, the experts say there is no convincing evidence that taking supplements of the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E can make you healthier...Vitamin A was linked to a 16 per cent increase in mortality, beta-carotene - the pigment found in carrots, tomatoes and broccoli which the body converts into vitamin A - to a 7 per cent increase and vitamin E to a 4 per cent increase. However, there was no significant detrimental effect caused by vitamin C..."

This isn't surprising and in line with other meta studies. By now the message is clear, try and get these vitamins through fruit and vegetables. If one is looking to increase longevity a bit beyond exercise and diet then compounds that increase endogenous antioxidants are an entirely different matter. There are plenty of such compounds - a few are: bacopa, curcumin, cocoa, milk thistle, ashwagandha, alpha lipoic acid, tea extracts, resveratrol and so on.

Fruit, Vegetable Eaters Have Fewer Strokes

Fruit, Vegetable Eaters Have Fewer Strokes - WebMD
2008.01.09
"...University of Cambridge researchers measured vitamin C levels in more than 20,000 people, who were then followed for roughly a decade. Blood vitamin C levels tend to be much higher in people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables than in people who do not. When the participants were divided into four groups based on vitamin C levels, those with the highest concentrations of the vitamin in their blood were found to have a 42% lower stroke risk than those with the lowest concentrations...The findings do not prove that it is the vitamin C in fruits and vegetables that is protective, the researchers note. And most studies have found that taking vitamin C and other antioxidant vitamin supplements is of no benefit for lowering stroke risk..."We don't know what it is, but the message to the public is clear," he tells WebMD. "Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Think about color, and eat a rainbow of plant foods."..."

Vitamin C May Slow Skin Wrinkling

Vitamin C May Slow Skin Wrinkling WebMD
2007.10.08
"...In one of the first studies to examine the impact of nutrients from foods rather than supplements on skin aging, researchers reported that people who ate plenty of vitamin C-rich foods had fewer wrinkles than people whose diets contained little of the vitamin...Diets rich in the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid were also associated with less skin aging from dryness and thinning, while higher-fat diets and those higher in carbohydrates were associated with more wrinkling...Sunflower and safflower oils and many nuts are high in linoleic acid. Byproducts of linoleic acid are plentiful in salmon and other fatty fish...what we eat affects our skin-aging appearance,” nutritional epidemiologist Maeve C. Cosgrove." However... "“Skin aging, especially facial aging, is remarkably multifactorial. It involves many things including genetics, ultraviolet light exposure, and lifestyle,..”

Not the strongest study, but maybe something to keep in mind till more research on diet and skin comes out.

vitamin supplements can reduce risk of having underweight or undersized baby

Vitamin pills prevent low-weight babies Reuters/Yahoo!News 4/4/07 "The study, conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, involved 8,468 pregnant women who were free of the AIDS virus and who received iron and folic acid supplements, both proven prenatal treatments. Half were given supplements containing vitamins C, E and a mix of B vitamins. The rest got placebos...The fetal death rate stayed around 5 percent and the rate of premature delivery was nearly 17 percent regardless of whether mothers got the vitamins, the team, led by Wafaie Fawzi of Harvard University's School of Public Health, reported...But the risk of having a low birth-weight baby dropped from 9.4 percent among the placebo recipients to 7.8 percent for the babies whose mothers took the supplements...About 20 million low birth-weight babies are born each year, 96 percent of them in developing countries. Babies of low birth weight, defined as less than 5.5 pounds (2,500 grams), are more likely to die young, have growth and learning difficulties and may later be prone to diabetes and heart disease...Adding the extra vitamins, they said, would probably increase that cost by just 20 cents, "and scaling up prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation could be a highly cost-effective approach to improving both outcomes among pregnant women in developing countries"

Here's an amazingly cheap and effective way to lower death rates of children and better the chances of healthier babies and healthier adults in the developing world. Let's hope foreign aid includes money for such soon - also maybe a few billionaires will see fit to invest in this, to get a program off the ground faster. Add choline (another very cheap supplement) to the mix and improve health further and fill the world with more intelligent folks.

Nutrient Combo May Curb Hearing Loss

Magnesium and Vitamins A, C, E May Help Prevent Noise-Induced Hearing Loss WebMD 3/30/07 "The guinea pigs were only exposed to the noise once. They got daily doses of their assigned treatment for the five days following noise exposure. Five days after noise exposure, the guinea pigs took hearing tests and had their ears examined. The guinea pigs that got the combination treatment of magnesium and vitamins A, C, and E had the least amount of noise-induced hearing loss and ear damage...The researchers speculate that the nutrient combination might reduce hearing loss even when it's only given after exposure to noise, but this study didn't test that theory. The University of Michigan has applied for patents for the nutrient combination's use in preventing noise-induced hearing loss"

In this case does applying for patent indicate unpublished but major findings in order to assure patent approval? Because this research alone doesn't seem to warrant a patent - so maybe they're sitting on other papers till the patent is approved. Or maybe the press isn't doing justice to the research. Who knows.

Other supplements that have shown promise for a variety of types of hearing loss here.

Vitamin C reacts with chromium 6 causing strong mutagen

Cancer-causing Compound Can Be Triggered By Vitamin C ScienceDaily 3/13/07 "Chromium 6, the cancer-causing compound that sparked the legal crusade by Erin Brockovich, can be toxic in tiny doses. Brown University scientists have uncovered the unlikely culprit: vitamin C. In new research, the Brown team shows that when vitamin C reacts with even low doses of chromium 6 inside human cells, it creates high levels of cancer-causing DNA damage and mutations...vitamin C reacts inside human lung cells with chromium 6, or hexavalent chromium, and causes massive DNA damage. Low doses of chromium 6, combined with vitamin C, produce up to 15 times as many chromosomal breaks and up to 10 times more mutations – forms of genetic damage that lead to cancer – compared with cells that lacked vitamin C altogether..."
