Maintaining Aerobic Fitness Could Delay Biological Aging By Up To 12 Years

Maintaining Aerobic Fitness Could Delay Biological Aging By Up To 12 Years, Study Shows: ScienceDaily
2008.04.10
"Maintaining aerobic fitness through middle age and beyond can delay biological ageing by up to 12 years and prolong independence during old age, concludes an analysis published ahead of print in the British Journal of Sports Medicine...relatively high intensity aerobic exercise over a relatively long period boosted maximal aerobic power by 25%, equivalent to a gain of 6 ml/ [kg.min], or 10 to 12 biological years...The other positive spin-offs of aerobic exercise are reduced risks of serious disease, faster recovery after injury or illness, and reduced risks of falls because of the maintenance of muscle power, balance, and coordination."

Study shows daycare may protect kids from leukemia - Yahoo! News/Reuters
2008.04.28
"...children who attended daycare or playgroups have a 30 percent lower risk of developing the most common form of childhood leukemia compared to those who do not...the review of 14 studies showed children who started daycare at age 1 or 2 had the most protection...The study did not identify how social contact may guard against leukemia but it adds to evidence that children exposed to infections early in life somehow gain protection against the rare disease, Buffler said. Scientists believe two things must happen for most types of childhood cancer. The first is some kind of genetic mutation that a child is born with followed by a trigger in childhood such as an infection that results in the disease, she added."This is just more evidence pointing to the role that some type of infection early in life could stimulate the immune system,"..."

Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life

Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'| News | This is London
2008.04.16
"Vitamins taken by around a third of the population do not extend life and may even cause premature death, according to a respected group of international scientists...After reviewing 67 studies involving more than 230,000 men and women, the experts say there is no convincing evidence that taking supplements of the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E can make you healthier...Vitamin A was linked to a 16 per cent increase in mortality, beta-carotene - the pigment found in carrots, tomatoes and broccoli which the body converts into vitamin A - to a 7 per cent increase and vitamin E to a 4 per cent increase. However, there was no significant detrimental effect caused by vitamin C..."

This isn't surprising and in line with other meta studies. By now the message is clear, try and get these vitamins through fruit and vegetables. If one is looking to increase longevity a bit beyond exercise and diet then compounds that increase endogenous antioxidants are an entirely different matter. There are plenty of such compounds - a few are: bacopa, curcumin, cocoa, milk thistle, ashwagandha, alpha lipoic acid, tea extracts, resveratrol and so on.

Green Tea Helps Beat Superbugs, Study Suggests

Green Tea Helps Beat Superbugs, Study Suggests - ScienceDaily
2008.04.01
"The pharmacy researchers have shown that drinking green tea helps the action of important antibiotics in their fight against resistant superbugs, making them up to three times more effective..."In every single case green tea enhanced the bacteria-killing activity of the antibiotics. For example the killing effect of chloramphenicol was 99.99% better when taken with green tea than when taken on its own in some circumstances."...Green tea also made 20% of drug-resistant bacteria susceptible to one of the cephalosporin antibiotics. These are important antibiotics that new drug resistant strains of bacteria have evolved to resist...The results surprised the researchers, showing that in almost every case and for all types of antibiotics tested, drinking green tea at the same time as taking the medicines seemed to reduce the bacteria's drug resistance, even in superbug strains, and increase the action of the antibiotics. In some cases, even a low concentration of green tea was effective..."

Red wine antioxidant may kill cancer cells: NutraIngredients.com
2008.03.27
"The antioxidant resveratrol, found in grape skins and red wine, can cripple the function of pancreatic cancer cells while sensitising them to chemotherapy...As well as disabling the function of the cancer cells by reaching and reacting with the mitochondria (the cell's energy source), researchers found that when they were pre-treated with resveratrol before being irradiated, it resulted in a type of cell death called apoptosis...The study found that resveratrol reduced the function of proteins in the pancreatic cancer cell membranes responsible for pumping chemotherapy out of the cell, therefore making them more sensitive to the treatment...Additionally, the antioxidant triggered the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing apoptosis, and depolarised the mitochondrial membranes, indicating a decrease in the cell's potential to function...The researchers said the discovery is important because the mitochnodria contains its own DNA and can continuously supply the cell with energy when functioning fully. Stopping the energy flow can therefore help stop cancer..."

It's likely, according to Jacobson's team, that mothers' third-trimester DHA intake is more important than babies' consumption of breast-feeding because of the "critical third trimester brain growth spurt."...Besides fish, such as tuna and salmon, other DHA sources include fish oil supplements and algae-derived DHA..."

There are also suggestions that vitamin D vitamin may prevent dysfunction in beta-cells (cells in the pancreas) caused by a class of proteins called cytokines...n September 2007, researchers from the University of Colorado at Denver reported that an increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources may reduce a child's risk of developing type-1 diabetes by 55 per cent..." supplements were 29 per cent less likely to develop

"In particular, our study shows that a chemical present in broccoli is capable of stimulating a wide range of antioxidant defense pathways and may be able to interfere with the age-related decline in immune function."...The UCLA team not only found that the direct administration of sulforaphane in broccoli reversed the decline in cellular immune function in old mice, but they witnessed similar results when they took individual immune cells from old mice, treated those cells with the chemical outside the body and then placed the treated cells back into a recipient animal...In particular, the scientists discovered that dendritic cells, which introduce infectious agents and foreign substances to the immune system, were particularly effective in restoring immune function in aged animals when treated with sulforaphane..."We found that treating older mice with sulforaphane increased the immune response to the level of younger mice," said Hyon-Jeen Kim, first author and research scientist at the Geffen School...sulforaphane interacts with a protein called Nrf2, which serves as a master regulator of the body's overall antioxidant response and is capable of switching on hundreds of antioxidant and rejuvenating genes and enzymes... Among women, those in the higher CRF level had a 43 percent lower relative risk than those in the lowest fitness level.
